The short answer: a lot. Here's what separates a handcrafted flogger from a mass-produced one.

Materials

Mass-produced: Often uses leather splits (the bottom layer of a hide), bonded leather (leather dust glued together), or synthetic materials labeled as "leather." These feel cheap, crack quickly, and can flake in ways that are genuinely unsafe during play.

Handcrafted: Full-grain or top-grain leather — the strongest, most durable part of the hide. Properly conditioned and finished. It ages beautifully and gets better with use.

Construction

Mass-produced: Machine-cut falls, glued or stapled into handles, inconsistent length and weight. The falls may not be properly secured — a serious safety issue during active play.

Handcrafted: Hand-cut falls, hand-braided or wrapped handles, individually weighted and balanced. Every piece is inspected before it leaves the workshop.

Balance and Feel

This is where the difference is most obvious. A well-made flogger feels like an extension of your arm. The weight is distributed intentionally — enough mass in the falls for impact, a handle that sits naturally in the hand.

Mass-produced floggers often feel "off" — top-heavy, unbalanced, or with falls that clump together instead of spreading on impact.

Safety

Cheap floggers fail. Falls detach. Handles crack. Tips fray into sharp edges. In a play context, equipment failure isn't just annoying — it can cause unintended injury.
